A Tribute to John Lennon

A Tribute to John Lennon

A Tribute to John Lennon

I think in my lifetime there stands three moments in which time stood still; one of those moments that becomes indelible in our minds and our souls. I am sure we can all remember exactly what we were doing that exact second when we heard the words: “Our President, John F Kennedy has been shot”; “John Lennon has just been shot in front of the Dakota, and died on the way to the hospital”; and the incident that changed the world, hearing “A plane has just hit the Twin Towers” – the day of Sept 11. It is these three tragedies that caused within me a fear, heartbreak, numbness that I will always carry with me.

Today, December 8th, marks the 40th Anniversary of that tragic evening when John Lennon, returning from a late night of recording, was gunned down in front of his home, The Dakota, with his bloodied glasses and a copy of his just released album Double Fantasy, which he had just signed for “a fan”, laying next to him. How ironic that all he ever wanted was Peace, as he sang “Give Peace a Chance”; or “Imagine” asking us to “Imagine there's no heaven, no hell below us, above us only sky, Imagine all the people living for today…” – it was all he ever asked for, only to be destroyed against all that he was asking us to believe in.

Born in Liverpool, England, on October 9, 1940 during a German attack with air sirens all around, everything had grounded to a standstill almost destroying most of Liverpool that night. It wasn’t long after that that John took up the guitar to fill the void of loneliness in his life. Although we always think of John Lennon as the fighter and the rebel of the Beatles, within, he was truly shy and very self-conscious. Never really wanting the fame that brought him to us and which ultimately took him away from us. In New York he found the quietness he was seeking, and where he retired from writing and performing; living the sheltered, peaceful life he was always seeking. It was only 3 months before his death, that a renewal of life took over and he start recording his first album in years “Double Fantasy” – I always thought it ironical as I listened to that album over and over that day, that the main song was “Starting Over” singing… “Our life together is so precious, our love still special…it’s just like Starting Over again”. It is almost like he had a premonition of what was to come.

In an interview just weeks before his meeting with John Chapman, John Lennon spoke these words: “You know..give peace a chance, not shoot people for peace. All we need is love – it’s damned hard, but I really believe it. Were not the first to say “Imagine no countries, or give peace a chance, passing it on from generation to generation”…”I’ve never claimed divinity. I’ve never claimed purity of soul. I’ve never claimed to have the answer to life. I can only put out songs and answer questions as honestly as I can, but only as honestly as I can – no more – no less”.

“You may say I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one – I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will be as one.” May he find the peace and tranquility in the heaven he was seeking all his life.

**I highly recommend anyone who is a true John Lennon fan, read Philip Norman’s book, “John Lennon, The Life” – you will learn the truth behind the man we all looked to for a peaceful world.

The Legend of Sleepy Hallow

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Welcome to "Sleepy Hollow"!

“From the listless repose of the place, and the peculiar character of its inhabitants, who are descendants from the original Dutch settlers, this sequestered glen has long been known by the name of SLEEPY HOLLOW. . . ”
.....Washington Irving, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Sign at the entrance to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

One of Ichabod Crane’s sources of fearful pleasure was to pass long winter evenings with the old Dutch Church wives as they sat spinning by the fire, and listened to their marvelous tales of ghosts and goblins, and haunted fields, and haunted brooks, and haunted bridges, and haunted houses, and particularly of the headless horseman, or Galloping Hessian of the Hollow, as they sometimes called him; all the while trying to win the affections of the Lady Abigail Van Tassel.

The Old Dutch Church

The Old Dutch Church was one of the favorite haunts of the Headless Horseman, and the place where he was most frequently encountered.  Not far from the church, along the Hudson River was a wooden bridge; the road that led to it, and the bridge itself, were thickly shaded by overhanging trees, which cast a gloom about it, even in the daytime; but occasioned a fearful darkness at night.

Tombstones dating back to the 1600's

As one strolls past the Old Dutch Church on a dark Halloween night, it is easy to imagine the shadow of the horseman rising up from behind the gravestones, many dating back to the 1600’s.  Armed with a Jack-O-Lantern, the Horseman gallops along in search of his head; wherein lies the history of the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow which began over 200 years ago, and his spirit has lived here ever since.

If you look closely at the many "Tombstones" you will see the names of many of the characters featured in Washington Irving's legendary story of Sleepy Hollow!

A Halloween View along the Hudson

About two years ago, my sons' surprised me for my birthday, with a "Midnight Walk" through the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.  The tour lasts two hours, coincidentally, it was only 2 degrees that night!  By end I couldn't even feel my toes.  We were met by our guide at the entrance, and each given a lantern to guide our way (this being the only light throughout the Cemetery)!   I must admit that even with my lantern, I managed to trip numerous times on the rocky and uneven pathways!

Lantern to guide our "Midnight Walk"!

During the Halloween Walk, we would stop at various gravesites, where our guide would relate some of the strangest stories of "murder and mayhem" almost a century ago, of famous Sleepy Hollow residents.  Some of the most famous tenants buried along the way, were the Rockefeller and Carnegie families, who of course, had the largest Mausoleums'.

One bizarre story was that of a prominent resident who wanted to bury his dog, although against the protests of many families who had plots throughout the Cemetery.  In protest, they would continually dig up the grave. Finally the owner of the dog had his casket encased in a steel box, then covered in cement.  So there the dog still remains!  Another story took place on New Year's Eve.  One Sleepy Hollow resident invited his close friend, and a  woman, who unfortunately they both had an interest in.  At midnight while toasting the New Year with flutes of Champagne, one guest didn't make it even to 2 minutes past Midnight!  Yes, the host poisoned his best friend for the love of his paramour!

Pleasant Dreams!
